I think the biggest affect that coveting has on someone is that we don’t see and appreciate the true gifts that God has given us. Internally, we neglect all the good qualities/gifts that we have and only focus on the bad things about ourselves. The fact that God created us as unique individuals is obstructed by our complaints and misery. The desire to have what other have, whether it be their personality, their circumstances, or physical things is another way of telling God that we want to have it our way and don’t trust his plans for us. God brings us out of this covetousness by putting us in situations in which he shows us how we are able to use our individual talents and gifts in a way that others can’t.

Coveting can be very destructive to people internally and externally as it can become obsessive. Constantly coveting for worldly treasures leaves people feeling empty and wanting more. Rather than being thankful for all the gifts God has blessed us with and using them accordingly, we are easily distracted by the world and tend to forget about the greater treasures that God already has in store for us. In order to break out of this endless cycle of envy and insecurity, we need to not only be content and grateful for God's gifts to us but to also be using these gifts to bring glory to the Lord. By centering our lives including all of our wants and desires around God, we can better treasure all the gifts He has given to us.
